His Colts are now eligible for the Irish horseboard’s Irish Draught Colt Retention Scheme

What they say about him :-

As he left Ireland; ‘This is a bad day for Ireland, there are far worse horses left in this country, he shouldn’t be leaving’ M. Marron

‘When you consider the total number of horses there are Eventing and of those only the top 10 -15% are Advanced and he has sired one of them, this would make him a very desirable sire when you look at how many stallions there are standing in this country’ Arthur Stevens - Organiser Bicton Horses Trials

‘A truly upstanding middle to heavyweight hunter with quality and bone in spade fulls ’ L Iliffe

He is my Rock - he even gave my husband his permission to marry me!’ Louisa Taylor

‘GARRYBAWN SKYLARK’ was bred by Aloysius Duffy from Castleblayney, Co Monaghan in 1985, from his very successful mare ‘Garrybawn Queen’ RID. She bred 13 foals to Skylark, 7 of which became RID mares themselves.
He is the only stallion son of both his dam and sire.
‘Skylark’ RID was one of the finest draught sires to stand in Ireland siring many horses including ‘Softee’ who went on to breed ‘Sumas Murphy’s Law’ RID and ‘Brown Dollie’.

Garrybawn Skylark is a stunning, quality, old fashioned Irish Draught sire from the oldest bloodlines available. He stood for many years at the Carrickatee Stud outside Castleblayney, where his sire stood, with Sam Burgess, until horse breeding in Ireland dictated that Irish Draught sires were no longer in demand and barely used.

He then came to me at the age of 12 to be ridden and enjoyed. Although he was broken in at 3, it took quite a while for him to muscle up in the right places under saddle. He has subsequently done a little Dressage and Showjumping, but it is hunting that is his passion. From the first day out he has always behaved like the utter gentleman he is.

Please, when you come to see him do not expect to see him pulling a plough. He is as at home in the Dressage or Showjumping Arena as he is out Hunting with hounds or starting the young horses on their life’s adventures. Many times out in public I am asked which warmblood sire he is by, and many times people are surprised to learn that a horse as fine as him could possibly be Irish, Why?

If you are looking for a stallion to produce you a safe, sound horse with a big heart, sound temperament and ability to perform should you wish to compete, then he is your man.

He complements many different types of mares and he passes his outstanding temperament to all.

Due to the old bad habit of not bothering to register foals, and for throwing passports away, I have had a hard job tracking down his stock.

If any one out there has horse by him I would love to hear from you.

I have found one by him called ‘Masterpiece’ a lovely horse that went Advanced with Stephine Thompson.

This year he has delighted us all siring the first placed ‘Hunter Foal’ at the South of England, her dam is ‘Nutwood Exbitionist’.

She then went on and gained 2nd at Kent county and Oxted and Edenbridge, 3rd at Royal Norfolk and Bucks County.
